"I’ve heard a few renditions of the Christian Wolff Exercises - some involving Wolff himself - and I have to say these new ones are my favorite. They are “realizations” in the fullest sense of making a new reality out of the schemata of the score. How? First, the transposition of them into the realm of jazz trio brings both clarity and fresh vernacularity to the exercises. Second, the players have deployed five exercises (plus responses/extensions of them) into a suite with its own convincing narrative arc. Third, each improvised “response/extension” attached to an exercise serves as something between a re-translation and an MRI of the original. Finally, these realizations have been beautifully engineered to bring a kind of majesty to the intimacy of the performances themselves. All in all, a provocative aural pleasure that incidentally serves as an elaborate toast to the composer and his ever-expanding circle of spiritual cohorts and descendants."
